Car Tyres : Safety Is Paramount

The condition of a vehicle’s tyres is probably the most important safely check that should be made on a vehicle before beginning any journey. It is crazy to think that there are a large number of people who will go to great lengths to find and purchase a vehicle with a particularly high safety rating, but do not make simple safety checks before they drive them. The safety of yourself and your family is at risk if you fail to make these very easy checks.

Before any journey is begun, especially long journeys, it is imperative that you spend a few minutes checking the tyres of the vehicle you will be driving. If a tyre is damaged, distorted or deflated, the consequences of failing to notice before driving could be catastrophic.

All tyres are designed with different intentions. Some tyres are designed for wet weather, some for snow, some for off-road conditions and some are designed for only dry, warm weather. For this reason, it is important to make sure the tyres that are fitted to your vehicle suit the conditions in which your journey will take place. For example, if you drive an SUV, it could have off-road tyres fitted; this would obviously be unsuitable if you spend most of your time driving on motorways as the tyres were not designed for that purpose.

It is expected that every driver will experience a puncture at least once during their lives; however, tyre deformations are actually more common and can be much more dangerous. If a tyre is punctured during driving, then it is generally easy to notice and hopefully the driver can safely navigate to the side of the road to repair or replace the tyre. A deformed tyre can go unnoticed for months or even years until it reacts with a certain situation which will cause a massive failure in the tyre, deflating very quickly and often causing accidents.

If a car has tyres which are excessively worn; this can have a huge detrimental effect on the handling characteristics of the car. Worn tyres will cause a loss in cornering ability, accelerating and braking ability and it can and does indirectly cause accidents. It is imperative that every driver regularly checks the wear rate of their vehicles tyres.

It can cost you more money in terms of fuel consumption if you drive with worn, damaged or unsuitable tyres, but more importantly, it can cost yours and your family’s life.
