Uprate Your Camshaft
Uprating the camshaft. Camshafts are made for production cars to control the amount of air and fuel let into the engine and control how much exhaust fumes can be let out of the car. Camshafts are normally made with the thought of performance, fuel economy and helping the emission control as well. By replacing the camshaft with a better one, you can increase the performance of your car and get better fuel economy too at the same time.
The lobes on the camshaft can be modified to allow more or less fuel to enter the engine by the duration of how much the lobes actually open. This is called the cam profile. These profiles are normally designed on computers these days and with by taking a laptop out of its laptop sleeve and plugging it to the car allows data can be found for the designs. Design of the profile is normally done to allow better release of the exhaust gases too.
If your car engine is one of the more popular types used for motor sport, you could find that there are many alternatives available for your car. To find a good one for your particular car, it would be a good idea to talk to some of specialists who deal with your car and get some advice. If you just drive your car on the road and are just after the extra boost for acceleration and overtaking, it would probably be wrong to just fit a rally style camshaft where you could loose all the drivability of the car at lower speeds and only get power when you are driving flat out. Sometimes the camshafts are marked such as “fast road”, Rally” and “race” rating. These ratings are a good guide to tell you which camshaft will probably suit your needs.
Fast road camshafts are normally made with a longer opening duration than originally fitted camshafts. The race and rally cams may have a higher lift for the valves. Some further modifications may need to be done too. The spring height of the valves may also need to be modified.
Fitting high lift cams can cause what is known as spring binding which means in some cases a shorter spring may have to be fitted as well. This will be some added expense. New valve springs too may need to be added to the shopping list as shorter ones will stop the valves hitting the pistons if the camshaft is a high lift one. You will have to remember that other mods may be required such as re-jetting the fueling system or re-mapping any ECU, a job for the 17inch laptop again and the exhaust system will have to be modified to help remove the waste exhaust gases. Most good tuning companies should be able to give you the right advice as to which cam is best for your situation.
