Improve On Your Cars Suspension
Improving your suspension. Normally suspensions fitted to cars normally are a compromise between a level of comfort and a level of handling. If you intend to start using your car for a more sporting nature, then you may have to consider making some improvements to your suspension. Car manufacturers will make the standard suspensions as soft as they can to help soak up the bumps. The downside to this is the car will tend to roll a lot more.
In terms of improving the handling the dampers are probably one of the most important things to uprate. If your car is fitted with oil filled dampers, these are normally controlled by how much oil passes through a valve inside the damper. By fitting heavy duty oil inside will make the damper stiffer to improve handling. Dampers which are over 30,000 miles will benefit from this upgrade. The one thing that happens with oil filled dampers are that they will tend to fade as the oil gets hot and starts to thin out. One of the solutions is to replace the dampers with gas filled dampers instead of oil filled dampers to help with the handling.
These feature pretty much the same hydraulic components as the oil dampers but have sealed compressible gas chambers which pre- pressure the hydraulic system to increase the load carrying capacity. You will find that some of the dampers you can buy also have an adjustable screw so you can adjust the stiffness of the damper should you be using your car for sporting events one day and road use another day. Many modern cars today have a gas filled alternative by some of the tune up companies and even if your car comes standard with gas dampers there is probably going to be an uprated version available. These are normally a bolt on affair with no other modifications to do.
The next thing to approach is the springs. There are two angles to approach the spring area. The first way is to stiffen the springs to help with the rolling and pitching. Try to make sure the springs are not too hard as this could cause the car to skate off the road.Other ways is to fit lowered and uprated springs which should help to lower the centre of gravity of the car and make t more stable.
Also looking at the roll bushes and other suspension bushes is worthwhile. By uprating to polyurethane instead of rubber will help to keep these bushes stiffer and give them less roll. The downside is due to the bushes not absorbing so much, there may be a bit more vibration in the ride. A bit like hockey ice skate, the more you pay the better quality you get.
Changing the suspension will definitely help with the handling on the straights as well as around the bends. However expect the comfort will not be as good as before.
